ChessBoxing was a hybrid sport imagined by cartoonist Enki Bilal. He drew a sketch of it for his graphic novel Froid Equateur. Iepe Bubingh was the first person to actually create a chessboxing match, he fought under the name “Iepe the Joker”. He is also the person who created the official rules to chessboxing, seeing as a boxing match followed by a chess match (as described in the graphic novel) did not seem so practical.
Iepe the Joker won the First World Chess Boxing Championship in 2003. By 2005, the first European Chess Boxing Championship took place, won by Atanassov Dovramadjiev of Bulgaria. Since then the sport has been growing rapidly, with clubs opening up in Russia, Germany, London, India, Spain, and the United States. More countries are soon to follow as ChessBoxing expands in popularity.
