Justin Lawrence Grimes grew up in the country town of New Melle, Mo with his adoptive grandparents and 3 brothers. As a kid he attended Francis Howell School District, helped start his school chess club, and was a Missouri Chess Champion. During High School, Justin’s father died and he was forced to live on his own. Inspired by the events of 9.11, he went to serve his country in the United States Marine Corps. After spending several years aboard the USS Enterprise he returned back home to where he married his high school sweetheart and now raises his two children, Zach and Katie.
For several years after returning from the Marines, Justin struggled to adjust to civilian life and developed a problem with alcohol. For him, Chessboxing is more than a hobby, it is an Anti-Drug.
Currently, Justin is a student at Lindenwood University and is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in history. He has faced many trials and tribulations throughout his life and sees Chessboxing as another obstacle to overcome. The skills he learned from the US Marines combined with his background as a chess player make him a force in the Chessboxing ring.
